Gym improved bone health, fitness and social life

Gym improved bone health, fitness and social life

The benefits of staying active later in life aren’t lost on Mary Gerard. She improved her own health with a membership to Arvida Good Friends Living Well Centre.

Breaking her wrist a few years ago, a scan revealed low bone density nearing osteoporosis. She decided to take action and join Arvida Good Friends in Christchurch where she accessed a variety of exercise options and seized the opportunity to meet new people.

Mary’s been amazed by the results from a second scan that showed her bone density had increased significantly. She says she tried out different activities at the centre like circuit, gym, aqua, and box-fit, but now has a regular routine.

“I enjoy a circuit class in the morning where I work on strength, balance, and coordination. Then it’s off to the gym to use the machines. Not only am I feeling stronger and more confident but I also feel more energetic.”

She also discovered the social benefits of exercising at the centre by meeting others who shared her interests. They formed a close-knit walking group on Sundays that ends with a coffee. Arvida Good Friends Living Well Centre provides personalised programmes and fitness classes specifically for older people and is used by many residents in Christchurch Arvida communities. Mary's very happy with her decision to join Arvida Good Friends, with its variety of classes and activities, and is adamant it’s never too late to start getting active.

“I think it’s a great place for older people who want to improve their health and make new friends, even if they haven’t exercised before.”
