More than a maintenance man
While the Te Awamutu sun is shining, Maintenance Manager Neil Goodrick and his team are hard at work washing all the villas, cleaning windows to a sparkling finish.
His efforts mean residents can fully enjoy their homes, inside and out, during the best months of the year.
But Neil’s commitment goes far beyond seasonal chores. For Arvida Whai Mauri Ora community residents who plan to travel over the holidays, Neil remains a reassuring presence in the village. He’ll be there, keeping an eye on everything, so neighbours can go on holiday with peace of mind, knowing their homes are in safe hands.
Neil began his career as a small engine mechanic, specialising in chainsaws and lawnmowers, eventually building his own successful business from scratch and employing a team of six. After selling his company, Neil transitioned into the retirement industry, where he helped develop and construct a privately-owned village.
Today, Neil’s role in Arvida’s retirement village in Te Awamutu is all about making life easier for residents. Whether he’s hanging pictures, repairing blocked drains, mowing lawns, or fixing something that’s broken, his approach is always hands-on. He lives by a simple philosophy from his first boss: “Treat people the way you want to be treated.”
A few of Neil’s handy tips:
- Don’t forget to clean your heat pump filter. It’ll help it to run more efficiently and help you to save on your power bill.
- Double-stay window latches help for better airflow when it’s warm.
- Prevent sink blockages with new bathroom vanity pop-up plugs by filling the sink three quarters full with boiling water, along with baking soda and vinegar, and quickly open the plug for a full flush.
For Neil, problem-solving is second nature and he relishes every challenge. “You work out how you’re going to do it and then you just get on and do it,” he says.
