Novel resident-led idea at Mayfair

Catherine Thomas isn’t just an avid reader, she also likes to keep herself busy with DIY projects.

Having just moved into a serviced apartment in Arvida Mayfair retirement community recently, Catherine wanted to create a more cosy library space and experience for residents.

The 85-year-old took the plans she had to her village neighbours and they agreed on the proposal for a ‘Book Nook’.

With the help of the village maintenance and housekeeping teams, Catherine moved the shelving together and chose the perfect area for the nook in the community lounge.

“When I was 7 or 8 I would play librarian with my dolls - the books even had date slips in the back. The library has always been a safe place for me and it's something I can contribute to,” she says.

Catherine then spent weeks going through all of the books and organised them with alphabet dividers and book ends. Now with library stickers on each book, the Book Nook is open for residents to enjoy a little quiet time with a good read.
