Pickleball serves up fun for residents

'Dink, kitchen, ace, and side out' are terms unlikely to be known by many, but Arvida Te Puna Waiora resident Peter Dalton is very familiar.

They’re terms used in pickleball and what began as a simple pastime for Peter - has quickly become one of the highlights on a Wednesday afternoon. Peter says he usually gets dragged along by talented Pickleball player and wife Brenda, but explains there’s always camaraderie on the court.

“There's six residents and a couple of Kerikeri locals who also come along to play pickleball. It's a lively blend of tennis, badminton, and table tennis.”

The sport has become popular across the globe and has been embraced by the Kerikeri village for its accessibility and low-impact nature. The new Te Ripo Wai Clubhouse in the village has meant the game can be played indoors and in all seasons. The Te Ripo Wai Clubhouse also features a resident bar, gym, bowling green and lounge area. Pickleball usually takes about 25 minutes each game and can be played in singles or doubles, using plastic paddles and a plastic wiffle ball.

Even the Arvida Te Puna Waiora Village Manager had a go at pickleball and was quickly outpaced by the experienced residents. Resident Maureen Hawkins was a keen tennis player many years ago and says Pickleball is great for keeping the mind and body fit and healthy on a regular basis.

“Pickleball is a good really good workout and there’s nothing like a little friendly competition between friends,” adds Maureen.
